Show Me The Money: The Image of Finance 1700 to the present

Show Me The Money charts how the financial world has been imagined in art, illustration, photography and other visual media over the last three centuries in Britain and the United States. The exhibition shows how artists have grappled with the increasingly intangible nature of money and finance from the South Sea Bubble of the early eighteenth century to the global financial crisis of 2008 and its aftermath. On show are works from the great eighteenth century satirists William Hogarth and James Gillray, alongside newly commissioned works by contemporary artists Goldin+Senneby, Cornford & Cross, Immo Klink,Simon Roberts and James O Jenkins, and the first UK exhibition of international artists such as Molly Crabapple and Thomas Gokey. As well as works in an array of media, the exhibition also reveals the development of an array of financial visualisations, including stock tickers and charts, newspaper illustrations, bank adverts and electronic trading systems.

Show Me the Money demonstrates how the visual culture of finance has not merely reflected prevailing attitudes to money and banking, but has been crucial in forging the very idea of ‘the market’. The exhibition will travel to three distinct regions of the UK, beginning at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, close to the HQ of Northern Rock, where the public first saw signs of the 2008 financial crisis in the UK. It will then be shown across two sites simultaneously: the John Hansard Gallery, part of Southampton University, and Chawton House Library in Hampshire, which was owned by Jane Austen’s brother who was himself implicated in a financial scandal of the 1810s. JoyceWays: Ulysses iPod App

An electronic resource mapping the Dublin of Joyce's Ulysses

An announcement for JoyceWays, a new application that maps the locations of James Joyce's modernist novel Ulysses:

Who would have thought of an app for the most sparkling novel of the twentieth century, the novel that put Dublin at the center of the literary universe? The students of Boston College did. It’s an iPhone app. And we’ve called it JoyceWays. It took three years, and we’re very proud of it. We think you’ll love it. Look at what it offers--

It’s six chapters from Ulysses; it’s twenty locations from Dubliners; it’s fifteen of Joycean hostelries. It’s got over 100 spots from Ulysses. Each comes with excerpts from the works glossed with expert criticism, quirky facts, and contemporary images. We’ve tried very hard to be open to the beginner, but not boring to the expert. We set out to to bring Joyce to everyone, yet never be condescending. We set out to be informative, even erudite, but with a common touch. We really hope we’ve succeeded.

Lots of people have helped us along the way—not least the James Joyce Centre.

Walking across Calypo, Aeolus, Nausicaa, Lotus Eaters, Lestrygonians, and Sirens, you’ll hear the voice of Frank Delaney (American Public Radio called him “the most eloquent man in the world”). Classic modernist poem updated for the 21st century

The Thought Fox, the official online blog of Faber &Faber, is promoting a new T. S. Eliot application for the Apple iPad. The app is dedicated to Eliot's most famous work, The Waste Land, and includes the full published text of 1922, video and audio readings, personal retrospectives, and explanatory notes. Henry Volans had this to say:

We deliberately chose a major work to demonstrate a serious commitment to the possibilities of digital publishing. We wanted to put more than a toe in the water. The enthusiastic support of the Eliot Estate has been vital: I can’t stress enough how much it improves a project, particularly an experimental one, when the work is undertaken in a collaborative spirit. There isn’t room for suspicion.

For multimedia we used a simple criterion: to apply the same standards that we would to the commissioning and typesetting of Faber poetry in print. To help ensure we didn’t lose our critical faculties in the use of video we recruited Adam Low, director of the award-winning BBC Arena documentary on Eliot. Adam and his experienced partners filmed not only all the Perspectives but also Fiona Shaw’s magnificent performance of the poem.

Audio components include archival and newly-commissioned recordings: we raided vaults for readings by Eliot himself, Ted Hughes and Alec Guinness; then invited Viggo Mortensen, himself a poet as well as actor, to introduce a contemporary American voice.

So what characterises The Waste Land for iPad? There is a lot in it, for a start. But importantly it is all contained in a clean, simple package. Many of our earliest ideas were discarded as needlessly complex, or nice in theory but worse in practice. We aim to present the poem first, and performances, readings, notes and perspectives only in service to it.[Read More]
